About the Organization: Community Works (CW) uses arts and education to question and interrupt the far-reaching cycle of incarceration. We engage youth and adults, in schools, neighborhoods and correctional facilities in programming that fosters self-empowerment and builds community. Through public exhibitions and events, CW unites diverse audiences to challenge perceptions of difference and facilitate dialogue around the shared impacts of incarceration and violence. 

Position Description:

The Youth Programs Manager, who reports to CW’s Executive Director, will oversee CW’s youth programming, which currently includes the ROOTS program at five Bay Area school sites, in-custody programming at the San Francisco and Alameda County Juvenile Justice Centers, Project WHAT!, a paid internship for children of incarcerated parents, Women Rising, a post-release program for young women ages 18-24, and the Making a Difference Projects.  The Youth Programs staff consists of the Youth Programs Manager and Youth Programs Coordinator. 

 

Primary Job Duties:

·      Supporting youth programs facilitators and community collaborators in curriculum development, program design, and logistics;

·      Managing CW’s Youth Programs facilitators, including maintaining employee files, payment systems, and required monthly reporting;

·      Collaborating with CW’s Youth Programs Coordinator in the management of CW’s East Bay programs;

·      Serving as a liaison between Youth Programs facilitators and CW management;

·      Providing guidance and input on overall strategic direction of youth programs;

·      Coordinating professional development and training for facilitators;

·      Assisting in developing programmatic language for youth programs grants;

·      Recruiting and hiring new artist-facilitators as needed;

·      Overseeing evaluation and monitoring of youth programs;

·      Coordinating and facilitating youth programs meetings. 

·      Conducting outreach and developing relationships with new school and community sites;

·      Representing Community Works at funder and community meetings;

·      Coordinating culminating events.

 

Required Qualifications:

·      At least 4 years non-profit program management experience, preferably in the arts or youth programs;

·      Experience working with at-risk youth, preferably incarcerated youth;

·      Strong knowledge of arts education principles and arts integration strategies;

·      Curriculum development experience and understanding of arts-based curriculum;

·      Understanding of program evaluation frameworks;

·      Experience managing staff and/or artists;

·      Strong organizational and communication skills;

·      Ability to work with diverse community stakeholders;

·      Candidate must have a car. 

 

Desired Qualifications:

·      Working knowledge of youth development frameworks and restorative justice principles;

·      Event planning experience;

·      Working knowledge of Spanish.

 

Position is FTE with benefits.  Salary range is 42-46K DOE.

Grant Writer

Community Works (CW) is seeking a part time Grant Writer (20-25 hrs/wk) to identify, secure, enhance and manage sources of funding for the organization.

The mission of CW is to provide disenfranchised populations in the San Francisco Bay Area with opportunities to build community and give voice to their experiences. CW believes that the arts and education can serve as valuable platforms for achieving this goal, incorporating personal expression, alliance-building, and public engagement. CW is particularly concerned with the effects of soaring incarceration rates on communities, impacting not only the offending individuals but also families, neighbors, and survivors of crime. CW links up with the institutions that most affect our constituents’ lives, including the criminal and juvenile justice systems, the public school system, and other community-based organizations, in order to provide enriching, sustainable programs that work to bring communities together.

Minimum Requirements:

• Bachelors Degree

• Minimum of two years fundraising or nonprofit development experience

• Computer literate in MS Office and FileMaker on a Mac platform

• Excellent writing, research and organizational skills

• Knowledge of the grant application process and grant writing experience for various types of funding (large/small foundation, corporation, government)

• Ability to meet deadlines and work on multiple projects simultaneously

• Proven track record (Candidates invited for interview will be asked to bring a writing sample of a successful grant application)

• An understanding of youth and/or arts programming is strongly desired

 

Responsibilities:

• Research and identify potential funders for the agency's programs; review application guidelines to determine if the foundation, government agency or corporation is a good match for CW.

• Write letters of intent and grant proposals:           

            o Work with agency staff to gather information as needed to assure accurate presentation of program plans to funders, determine realistic and measurable goals and objectives for the proposed project, substantiate the need for the program in the community, describe methods and activities for carrying out the program, and describe evaluation process.

            o Assemble proposals and LOIs for submission, including all required documentation and packaging. Maintain quality control over grant submittals.

• Budgets: Work with admin staff and program manager to develop program-specific budgets for grant proposals and applications. Work with Bookkeeper to secure periodic and end-of-contract financial reports for funders.

• Track due dates for reports and renewal applications. Coordinate completion and submission of required reports, reminding/assisting program managers as required.

• Develop professional working relationship with private and public funder contacts and monitors. Maintain a current roster with contact information, application deadlines, and invoice and report deadlines.

• Review and develop a thorough understanding of all current CW grant contracts.

• Attend and participate in strategic planning and staff meetings; attend funder briefings as required.

• Keep staff informed of grant writing activity, awards and declines; submit monthly internal reports of activity.

• Some copywriting/development of marketing materials and other duties as assigned by director.

 

Compensation: DOE

This is a part time, independent contractor position. You must be willing to work at our office in Berkeley at least two days/week, you can work the remaining hours at home.
